The Journey is based upon the novel The Hobbit written by J.R.R. Tolkien, published on 21 September 1937. The subjects of the painting include:

• Thorin Oakenshield’s ring surrounding the Shire;
• Elrod’s ring surrounding Rivendell;
• The One Ring near the Misty Mountains;
• Beorn the skin-changer’s house;
• The Lonely Mountain and finally,
• Smaug the dragon.
